About Our Livestock
Farm Shop in Shropshire
Shraden Herefords have been in existence since 1919. They were founded by store-owner, Hazel's grandfather, William Everall. They now number around 120 with 45 breeding cows. Emphasis has always been on good female lines with level toplines, depth of body, good ability to produce milk and saleable beef with minimal supplementary feed. Keeping breed character and also style have also been important. They have in the past been exported all over the world and in recent years have helped to start up many new Hereford herds. Shraden Violet L2 gave birth to Leos Pride Elisia-Supreme Champion at the Royal Showin and last October the top priced bull at the Autumn bull sales in Hereford was out of Shraden 1 Duchess U2.
They are shown at about 10 shows during the year giving plenty of opportunity to see them out but are also always available to view at home. They are BVD and Lepto vaccinated and are currently being tested to join the premium health scheme run by SAC. This includes tests for Johne's and IBR. They are breedplan recorded and igenity tested. Our herd are tested for TB and brucella on a biannual basis. The last clear test was in March 2007.
They are constantly tested for the production of tender and tasty meat as anything that is not sold for breeding is put through the farm shop. Stock bulls are currently Bosa 1 Ashley and Panmure 1 Admiral. We have a selection of young heifers and bulls usually for sale. Female families include Alice, Duchess, Sunflower, Potency, Portia, Oystergirl and a new addition, Blossom.
The cows run out from March until November and are then housed in an open shed and fed home produced silage. Young stock are weaned at 7-8 months and given ad lib creep feed whilst on their mothers and then a controlled amount to supplement green feed until they finish or are moved into the herd as replacements.
